David Webb

“When David Webb first opened in 1948, it aligned with the arts. Webb started designing and his designs mirrored the times. His work was like the work coming out of Europe…very feminine, floral, and with fauna motifs, but Webb had this direct relationship with his clientele. As time moved on into the 50s and 60s, it was a magical time in American history. A lot of energy and change took place, spurring a cultural revolution. The voice of women started to emerge and become stronger.

As Webb’s soft designs started to mature, the jewelry started to grow more bold and muscular. Animals started out petite and began to grow, and by the 70s it was very architectural and dynamic. It’s an observation of the times. The animal jewelry is always popular. It’s such good sculpture and art that it has survived and been popularized over the last fifty years. It’s whimsical, beautiful, and distinctly David Webb. Everyone enjoys his beautiful animal iconography.

We spent 35 years in the secondary market buying and selling jewelry. The most memorable jewelry we had sold over the years had been David Webb. When we got the keys to the store, we discovered intellectual property such as drawings and sketches. It was in total disarray in stacks and attics, but we had instincts on how to proceed. We moved from cramped quarters to reestablish the state-of-the-art workshop, created an archive, commissioned Ruth Peltason to write a book, and organized a museum show at the Norton Museum of Art that began January 15th and will run through April 13th. Since embarking on this journey, our continual love and respect for Webb’s life and work has somehow become even stronger.” -David Webb owners, Mark Emanuel and Robert Saidian
